Of Thee We Sing: Art and New Patriotism | January 31st
This For Freedoms Town Hall invites a group of artists from different disciplines including theater, dance, visual art, public art, and music to explore creative ways of engaging with civic identity, challenging traditional symbols, and rethinking what patriotism can look like in our modern world. Live performance excerpts from American Patriots provides attendees with an unflinching look at the lived reality of American Ideals today. Artists and cultural organizers Holly Bass, Helena Huang, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Miguel Luciano, and Samantha Williams will follow with a discussion on how the language and interpretations of patriotism can be rebranded, subverted, and redefined through artistic expressions.

This program is part of the For Freedoms Artist Activation series, produced with the For Freedoms collective, which creates dedicated time for invited artists to activate and intervene within the spaces of the National Gallery. Artists will explore a wide range of creative civic expressions through interactive performances, pop-up installations, talks, workshops, and more in 2025. The series will include a Town Hall discussion at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University on January 31.
