I Care If You Listen Review April 2024

An excerpt from the full article:

Fittingly for a piece about the United States, many of American Patriots‘ songs combine elements of both classical music and jazz, and the style and subject matter of the songs traverse the breadth of American experience. The provocative text of “I’m Not BIPOC” becomes a perfectly squeamish, funny piece of musical theatre in the hands of composer Yaniv Segal and soprano Annie Sherman. In the song, a white actress declares that America does not have a “race problem,” and in a paroxysm of cognitive dissonance, that, “the whites are the ones being oppressed.”

By contrast, “Homecoming,” with music by Regina Harris Baiocchi, highlights the painful discord of a Black Navy veteran returning home to a United States wracked by racial violence. And “Could Have Been Me,” also by Segal, is a first-person account from an undocumented immigrant crossing the southern border from Mexico into the United States….

YOU’VE MADE A COMMITMENT TO “INTENTIONAL STORYTELLING” WITH AMERICAN PATRIOTS. HOW DO YOU DEFINE “INTENTIONAL STORYTELLING,” AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU AND TO THE CREATION OF THIS WORK?

I find myself embodying the tension between a need to advocate for caution, intentionality, accountability, and responsibility when it comes to portraying stories other than our own, particularly those of marginalized identities, AND a deep desire to protect space for artists and creators to be able to do what they do – to storytell, to interpret, to create, to transcend.

Oregon Artswatch Review: "A kind of shelter: Renegade Opera’s ‘American Patriots’ and ‘She Loves You Back’"

Written December 19, 2023 by Charles Rose

An excerpt from the full article:

The Alberta House was an appropriate venue for the shows. The politically charged American Patriots matched well with the paintings on the walls depicting the 2020 George Floyd protests in Portland. The paintings were a more impressionistic take on the events, but seeing shadowy figures looming in front of a boarded-up courthouse downtown was a familiar enough sight for me to understand them immediately.

Three vocalists took turns portraying at least a dozen characters and perspectives: Annie Sherman, Robert Wesley Mason, and Williams herself. Some of the best moments of the show saw the three singing in harmony together, such as the tune “Sovereignty” which addressed life on Native American reservations. All three did a great job embodying a diverse collection of characters from various ethnic, social and economic backgrounds.

The diverse instrumentation of a jazz octet (two winds, trumpet, violin, guitar, bass, percussion and piano) gave the composers a wide tonal palette to work from, with many songs sounding like some of the more ornate compositions of Charles Mingus or Esperanza Spalding. With this instrumentation the music spanned all sorts of styles, from the heavy-swinging C minor blues of “Aging out” to the open 4ths and tubular bells of “Flag.”

American Patriots: 2023 Artists in Conversation Festival

Working alongside Abby Krawson, Elliot Menard, and Maddy Ross, of Genegade Opera, the American Patriots team had a week o frehearsals and weekend of performances in Renegade Opera’s 2023 Artists in Conversation.

The workshop performances, held on November 18 and 19 were the first time audiences heard the full orchestration of American Patriots. for three voices and 8-piece mixed ensemble. Arranged and orchestrated by Music Director, Yaniv Segal, this ensemble consisted of oboe/english horn, alto/bari saxophone, trumpet, electric guitar, percussion, violin, double bass/electric bass, and piano. This instrumentation was the perfect medium in blending classical, jazz, boardway, opera, and rock.

The week with Renegade was an incredible success, with workshops performances of American Patriots being incredible well received by audiences in both days! Our staff is inspired and is continuing the work to plan for our next residency with the Salina Symphony in January!
